Frequently Asked Questions

We add sugar at the beginning of the fermentation process, which the live cultures consume and convert into organic acids and carbon dioxide (bubbles!). By the time the fermentation process is complete, all the sugar has been consumed and the final product is sugar free.

We know that health problems such as obesity and tooth decay are linked to the amount of free sugars in our diets and that most children and adults in the UK eat too much sugar, so it was important for all of our drinks to be sugar free or low in sugar.

In order to achieve this, whilst maintaining a great taste, we chose Stevia to sweeten our Sugar Free Kombucha and Water Kefir.

Stevia is 200 times sweeter than table sugar, meaning we only needed to use the tiniest amount to achieve the perfect level of sweetness. Stevia is also naturally derived from plants and has no effect on blood sugar levels or negative effects on health, making it safe and suitable for everyone.

All of our sugar free drinks are suitable for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Our Health Shots are low in sugar. The Gut & Brain Shot contains 2g sugars per 100ml, 1.2g sugars per 60ml bottle. The Gut & Immune Shot contains 2.3g per 100ml, 1.4g sugars per 60ml bottle.

Our Organic Kombucha (in amber glass bottles) is low in sugar, containing approximately 4g sugars per 100ml, 11g sugars per 275ml bottle.

Yes, all our drinks contain a tiny amount of alcohol as a natural by-product of the fermentation process. The amount is so small that our drinks are categorised as non-alcoholic, and are often lower than the levels of alcohol found in a piece of fruit or natural fruit juices.

Our Water Kefir is suitable for children aged 2+ and is a great substitute for sugary soft drinks! We recommend gradually introducing the drinks into children’s diets to allow time for their digestive systems to get used to the live cultures. Some people may experience gas, bloating or a change in bowel habits when they first start drinking it.

Our Kombucha is naturally caffeinated (no more than one cup of green tea) and unpasteurised, so is not recommended for children under the age of 5.

Our Health Shots have been formulated for adults who have different nutrient needs compared to children. The levels of vitamins and minerals in our health shots exceed daily requirements for young children so are not recommended for children under 10.

All of our drinks are gluten free and therefore suitable for Coeliacs.

Our Water Kefir is caffeine free!

Our Kombucha is naturally caffeinated as it is brewed from Sencha green tea, but it therefore contains no more caffeine than one cup of green tea.

Our Health Shots contain a small amount of Kombucha so they contain even less caffeine than our Kombucha drinks.

Unfortunately our Kombucha is raw and unpasteurised, and therefore not suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

However, our Kefir Water and Health Shots have been pasteurised and so they are suitable and safe to drink. In fact, clinical studies have indicated that the prebiotic fibre in our Health Shots significantly increased the proportions of bifidobacteria (a ‘good’ bacteria) in the maternal gut!

Our Water Kefir has added probiotic bacteria Bacillus Coagulans which studies have shown alters intestinal bacterial flora to help support relief from bloating or digestive discomfort. This strain of bacteria has been found to successfully treat conditions such as IBS. Please note, however, that the benefits of ‘probiotics’ are strain specific and variable amongst individuals.

Our Health Shots contain Bacillus Coagulans as well as prebiotic Chicory Inulin. However, please note that if you are following a low FODMAP diet, Chicory Inulin is a fructo-oligosaccharide, which may trigger IBS symptoms including bloating and flatulence in some people.

Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) vary from one person to another so it is always best to speak to your GP or health professional first: what helps alleviate symptoms for one person may be a trigger for someone else, which is especially true of fermented food and drinks.

If you suffer from IBS and decide to try our drinks for the first time, we recommend you introduce them into your diet gradually, monitor your symptoms and, if you experience any discomfort, consult your GP or a health professional.

Kombucha typically contains Gluconacetobacter, Lactobacillus and Zygosaccharomyces as part of the fermentation process. However, as our Kombucha is authentically made, the number of live cultures varies by batch.

There are approximately 2 billion live bacteria of the species Bacillus Coagulans in each of our Health Shots.

There are more than 100 million live bacteria of the species Bacillus Coagulans in each of our Water Kefir bottles (330ml).
